Library / ICT

The role of the library at St. Emile is to support teaching and learning goals that ensure students develop as information literate learners. To that end, the library collection is rich in material supporting the curriculum of all grades.  As well, the library is a fun, exciting and vibrant place where children are encouraged to have fun with books and to become lifelong readers.

All students are encouraged to come to the library, with permission from their classroom teacher, whenever there is a need for reading material or information.

Staffing

Rosemary Hollett is St. Emile's full-time Library technician.  Ms. Hollett is present Days 1-4  from 9am to 3:30pm.

 Book of the Month

Every month the library will feature a book from our "Cultural Diversity" collection.  This collection supports St. Emile's philosophy of respect for all.  We hope these titles may lead to discussion among students, staff and parents on topics such as diversity of racial and ethnic origins, social justice and human rights.  This month's book is:

Four Feet, Two Sandals  by Karen Lynn Williams Four Feet, Two Sandals

When relief workers bring used clothing to the refugee camp, everyone scrambles to grab whatever they can. Ten-year-old Lina is thrilled when she finds a sandal that fits her foot perfectly, until she sees that another girl has the matching shoe. But soon Lina and Feroza meet and decide that it is better to share the sandals than for each to wear only one.

As the girls go about their routines — washing clothes in the river, waiting in long lines for water, and watching for their names to appear on the list to go to America — the sandals remind them that friendship is what is most important.

Four Feet, Two Sandals was inspired by a refugee girl who asked the authors why there were no books about children like her. With warm colors and sensitive brush strokes, this book portrays the strength, courage, and hope of refugees around the world, whose daily existence is marked by uncertainty and fear.

If you would like to borrow this book or others from our collection, please visit the library at your convenience.
