About the Program...
My name is Mr. Fiorentino and I'm the grade 5 teacher at St. Emile School for the 2011/2012 school year. This will be my first full year at St. Emile and I am very excited to work with the boys and girls in my class. I joined St. Emile last year at the end of the year, teaching in grade 7, and I have enjoyed being a part of this school community. I look forward to a fun filled year with the new grade 5’s.
Please check this site for information about what is going on in the grade 5 classroom.
Currently we are working on the following:
Language Arts:
Weekly activities for grammar and spelling. There will be a spelling test every Friday.
Reader’s Workshop which allows time for reading in the classroom for at least 30 minutes a day. As well, the students are also requested to read 30 minutes at home every day.
Writer’s Workshop is used for strengthening the writing skills of the students. We have started creating our stories.
Math:
Weekly problem solving challenges and mental math practice
Every week, the students will receive a Problem of the Week on Monday and they are to hand it in to me on Friday. Parents, please feel free to work on the problem with your children. They should be showing their work and writing sentences with their answers.
We are focusing on Estimation right now. We are also playing 'Math Games" once a cycle, where they practice various math skills.
Social Studies:
People and Stories of Canada to 1867
First Peoples
Science:
Weather
The students will be focused on how weather affects people, the different types of weather, the water cycle, climate and much more.
Religion:
May We Be One, is the textbook used for the year.
We are focusing on the importance of respect in our classroom and school for the first part of religion. We have also welcomed the newest addition to the classroom, the class rock. We went on a rock hunt and found the rock in the schoolyard.
Library:
Library is always on Day 5 in the morning.
Agendas:
I believe the use of an agenda is very important for organizational skills.
I request that the children return their agendas to school every morning with an initial from their parents, and they will be sent home with my initial, at the end of the day. Any notes, calendars or papers for you to see, should be inside the clear pouch at the front of the agenda. If you have anything to send to me, please place it in the clear pouch and I will receive it.
Please feel free to come by the classroom if you have any questions.
